Janko Kastelic

The Slovenian Canadian pianist, organist and conductor studied composition, conducting, and music theory at the University of Toronto, Faculty of Music. After studying, Janko Kastelic moved to Europe, where he worked as a pianist at the Parisian Opéra National, and as a pianist, second chord director and deputy director of the opera school at the Viennese Staatsoper. From 2008 to 2011 he was Director of the Music and Opera Director of the Slovenian National Theater Maribor. In 2011 he returned to Vienna, where he took over the musical direction of the child victims Aladdin and the Wunderlampe and Die Feen at the Viennese Staatsoper. From 2012 to 2013 he was a guest director at the Staatsoper Hamburg and since 2013 he has been the artistic director of the CULTUREpoint Piran, which he co-founded. Since 2015, he has been working as a conductor and director of the Wiener Hofmusikkapelle at the Theater an der Wien. 

Janko Kastelic has also dedicated himself to modern music in baroque music, as a freelance conductor, pianist and composer. In addition to numerous arrangements, his versatile musical work includes compositions of pop and film music as well as solo and chamber music. It is his own personal mission and desire to inspire young audiences for music and to pass on the love of music to the next generation.

He is co-founder of CULTUREpoint Piran and since 2015 has held the title of chamber actor of Theater an der Wien as a study director and as a Kapellmeister of the Viennese Hofmusikkapelle. Starting in May he will be a choir director at the Zurich Opera House.
